PILIDO’s work focuses primarily in the area of rights to security of land tenure and natural resources, enhancing resilience and adaptation to climate change, livestock transformation and revitalizing rangelands as well as pastoral indigenous systems. The work further addresses women empowerment and gender equality, household food security, research into use (RIU) and capacity building for both local communities and PILIDO staff.
PILIDO Stands for Pilot light Development Organisation, and it has been established to address development challenges faced by communities in northern Tanzania that face multiple threats from climate change, shrinkage of land and natural resources, multiple marginalization and inadequate participation in development processes.
PILIDO is a civil society organisation registered in Tanzania under the Non-Governmental Organisation Act, no. 24 of 2002 as amended in 2019 with the certificate of registration no ooNGO/09538. In the area of community development, PILIDO works in the Districts of Arumeru, Longido, Monduli, Ngorongoro, Simanjiro and Kiteto that administratively fall under the Arusha and Manyara regions

Tanzania is well endowed with natural resources. It has vast lands, lakes, rivers, mountains, scenic areas full of wildlife, huge oil and gas reserves, mineral deposits, wetlands and rich wide range of forests and rangelands.
One of the core strategic programmes consistently implemented by PILIDO is the Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Programme. This Programme, originally named Light For Women (LFW)
Tanzania is well endowed with livestock resources; it is the second country in Africa having the largest number of livestock after Ethiopia. Tanzania assumed this second position after Sudan
HIV/AIDS remains a major public health concern in Tanzania and in other southern African countries, it is a major threat facing various segments of the human population and it widely threatening human lives,
To collect, analyse, document and disseminate relevant climate science information to target communities
To build capacity and capabilities in resilience and adaptation to climate change
To develop, establish and maintain sustainable forms of land use that address land degradation, deforestation, desertification and address environmental degradation
To work for governance and management for natural resource issues to enhance productivity of land rangelands
To enhance livestock productivity, production and livestock productivity, production and sustainability of indigenous livestock species
To facilitate women and youth empowerment
To address the HIV/AIDS pandemic and reproductive health. PILIDO further works with a range of CSOs to develop both organizational and institutional capacity to work as agents of social change and promote holistic as well as inclusive sustainable development.
PILIDO works at community level and focuses on the persistently rising levels of poverty, marginalization and impoverishment among agro-pastoral communities
